President’s Corner

Ray's Color PortraitPresident’s Corner – June 2018

Another school year is over. And as many of you reflect on the changes that have happened with your students over the past 9 months, I’ve been reflecting a lot about what I’ve experienced in this first year as union president. Suffice to say, being the chief representative of nearly 1,000 members is an emotional roller-coaster. Sitting in discipline meetings or providing support to someone weighing the cost-benefit of resigning or being non-renewed is painful. (Of course, much more so for the member!) But, receiving a kind word of support or “thank you” has gone a long way to help me start each day with the energy to provide support and guidance to members and to “fight the good fight” to improve wages and working conditions. In all honesty, I don’t feel that I have done much to make improvements this year. If anything, I feel as if folks are more anxious than ever about their income and other things like job security, relationships with administrators and the escalating negative behaviors of students. I think this is in large part because there are some member-issues that I’ll be working on over the summer and we still have a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to establish with the District. And with respect to the CBA, the biggest issue is a new salary schedule!

Having mentioned bargaining (and refraining from any further sad images here), I’m asking you to stay connected to some extent to the activities of your union this summer by periodically checking the NTEA website and your home e-mail for updates. I’m also letting you know at this time that I have applied to use the Timberline High School main gym for a General Membership meeting starting at 4 pm on Monday, August 27. Scheduling this meeting now is important given the task that is ahead for your bargaining team and what you have told them you need from this next bargain. While I don’t yet know exactly what the agenda will be, I can say that we will either be rolling out the process for voting on a Tentative Agreement (much like at the General Membership meeting last August) or we will be debating some sort of action.

In the meantime, get some rest, travel, finish house projects, or binge watch something you’ve put off watching and I’ll see you in the August.

In solidarity,

Ray
